HISTORY

Osteopathy:

It is an art to diagnose and treat by hand, the dysfunctions of the body's tissue which involve functional troubles and troubling health state.

Andrew Taylor Still, Considered as the father of osteopathy, was one of the first people to understanded the relations between the mechanism of the whole body and the notion of health.
Doctor at the end of the last century in the United-States, he broke from traditional medicine in 1874. He had structured in a logical way the sense of medicine in ancient Egypt and Greece, then the renascence medicine, in Europe.
On the 1874, he understood that the proper health balance was based on the balance of the bone strucure, which provided harmony for the nervous, muscular and circulatory systems. After this discovery, he had formed the following postulate: the structure governed the function.

In 1918, John Martin Littlejohn, a former pupil of A.T.Still founded the British school of osteopathy in London, and thus osteopathy came to Europe.

In France, in spite of efforts made by doctor Mounttin and Mann on the 1913 and later, by doctor Lavezzari, osteopathy remained still off-the-record.
Osteopathy had known its first expansion thanks to PAUL GENY, the founder of the French school of osteopathy, in 1950.
But, yielding to various pressures, P.Geny was forced to exile to the Great Britain, where he founded the European school of osteopathy with J.Wernham , one pupil of Littlejohn.

Between 1950 and 1960, different organizations were formed, with teachers coming from the UK and the USA, the doctrine of osteopathy has been reorganized and no longer been interrupted.

Thus, the activity of osteopathy was formed and progressively recognized both by patients and the medical world.

Osteopathy was finally recognised in France by the French government on the 4th march 2002.

When and why consulting?

General information:

The main reason for consultation is back pain. This pain has often various origins, that the patient does not suspect (visceral, cranial, peripheral, etc). In all the cases, the osteopath will treat the mechanical aspect of this pain; by finding the mobility of the articulations which are not mobile any more.

The vertebral handling, most known by the public, often creates a "crack". This noise is not to in no case sign of success of the treatment, although it creates an instantaneous relief most of the time, nor a sign of dangerousness of manipulation. This noise is for the majority of the authors of a depression will intra capsular which creates a CO2 release (passage of a liquid state a gas state) in the socket.

The therapist check-up at first for a loss of articulation mobility, that it is a vertebral or peripheral articulation (upper limbs and Inferior).

A back pain or a low back pain means a pain and a block. At the end of the consultation of osteopathy, the patient should must feel more mobile and feel a better flexibility of his spinal column. Thus, a back pain or a low back pain must be improved overall at the end of a session and improved well even neat at the end of 2. This is obviously the ideal case, and any patient, depending on the state of its articulations (osteoarthritis, etc.) will react differently to a session.

A session of osteopathy consultation:

Details of a consultation:

A consultation lasts approximately forty minutes, according to the type of pathology and the chronicity of this one.
Your osteopath generally proposes a second consultation to you after the first one. You are free to cancel the appointment if you are better, but it should be known that a chronic pathology (as from 3 months) is not treated in one consultation. You have to count 3 on average.

Before a consultation:

Try as far as possible to bring all the latest radiological stereotypes (scan, IRM, Radios, etc.) at the time of the first session of osteopathy. Indeed, it is essential for your therapist to know all the details of your anatomy,in particular your cervical rachis before any manipulation.

During the session:

A consultation Begins with a clinical interrogatory: the pain of chronicity, signs in rising or downing, the paroxysmal period etc. Your therapist should know all your histories which could be relate with your pain. It is important to not forget anything during his inquest, and let him to draw back your answers with no links about.
Then, he will examine your body in different positions: in standing, in lying. And test your active and passive motilities, also your resistance etc. it is the moment to identify a good osteopath or not by his hand’s feeling.
The osteopath appraises the articulation flexibility and the body tissue to locate your trouble. This practice needs not only knowledge on anatomy and physiology, but also in-depth manipulation techniques.
Your therapist will treat you once he found the trouble. There are such different treatments, some more efficient, more quick than others, but he needs all them to give a treatment fitted to any patient and any clinical case.

In general, a lot of patients were feared about techniques called “thrust”, these practices could provide a “crack” of articulation, however, this do not signify the end of manipulation. It is essential to know that the aim of a manipulation is in order to inform the treating structure and regain its flexibilities.

Conclusion of a consultation:

Following a session, you will generally feel yourself tired. The pain, the reason for consultation, generally could be increased by articulation inflammations after a manipulation, and then it will strongly decrease in the following 48-72hours. The goal of the first consultation is foremost to free the injured articulation. As it is specified higher on this page, for a chronic pathology, it will be necessary more than one consultation.
You have to give several days ease for your body to find its proper stability and then profit the benefits of osteopathy. However for some acute pathology like a high or low back pain, you could find a satisfaction quasi-immediately after your first session, because your body has not yet been completely unbalanced.
